1930 Bugatti Type 43A Roadster

1930 Bugatti Type 43A Roadster

FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF COUNT CZAYKOWSKI,
ANDRÉ BINDA, AND MARC NICOLOSI

WITH ITS AMERICAN STYLED BODY this diminutive roadster was designed to provide performance and luxury to the sporting lady or gentleman; the country club set. The “a” model afforded its passenger more comfort than the spartan “grand sport” model. Of the 158 Bugatti Type 43s built, only 17 were built to “a” specification. Chassis 43289 was produced in 1928, but the factory’s asking price was so high that the completed model was not purchased until 1930. In February of that year, the car was ordered by Frederich, the Bugatti agent in Nice, France. The following month, Count Czaykowski of Poland acquired the car for the remarkably high price of 101,500 Fr. Francs and took delivery thirty days later. However, the Count only owned the car for a short time, and several rapid changes in ownership occurred before Marcel Dornel of France bought the car in 1932. The history of the Type 43a went unrecorded from that time until 1962, when it was purchased by Bugatti collector André Binda of Nice. He owned it for over two decades before selling it, in 1987, to Marc Nicolosi, president of the Bugatti Club in France and creator of Rétromobile. Peter Mullin purchased chassis 43289 from Nicolosi in 2007. This rare Bugatti is both highly original and in top running condition.
