1939 Bugatti Type 57C Aravis

1939 Bugatti Type 57C Aravis

FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF MAURICE TRINTIGNANT
AND RUDY VAN DAALEN WETTERS

CHASSIS 57768 created specially by Jean Bugatti for his friend Maurice Trintignant, one of the most famous Grand Prix drivers on the Bugatti factory team. It was delivered on March 1, 1939, for a discounted price of 105,000 Fr. francs. Of the ninety-six Type 57C models produced between 1936 and 1939, only a few were made in the Aravis style by Gangloff, a coachbuilder in Colmar, France, not far from the Bugatti factory. The two companies had a close association throughout their respective histories. The Aravis was considered one of the most elegant and balanced convertible coupés in the Type 57 series. Both Bugatti and Trintignant were enamored of Chassis 57768, the latter stating “Jean Bugatti told me this was the most beautiful Type 57. I regret having sold the car at the end of the war, but I thought that Bugatti would then start building new models and I would buy a new one. Unfortunately, this was not the case.” Trintignant understandably enjoyed his elegant sports car and is known to have put it though its paces at the Grand Prix du Cominges before selling the car around 1947 to Jacques Roblin. From him it passed into the hands of Madeleine Mitton and in 1964, into those of Rudy van Daalen Wetters. In 2002, Peter Mullin purchased the Type 57C from Wetters and, after a complete restoration with personal guidance from Trintignant, displayed it at the 2005 Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance, where it won First in Class.
